RADBAR / SELECTION GUIDE
Radiation Shielding Product Selection Guide
Match the radiation source, protection format and test conditions to the right Radbar product family, from garment cores and scanner curtains to panels, clear lead acrylic and gamma materials.
How do you choose the right radiation shielding product?
Start with the radiation type and operating conditions, then choose the protection format: something worn, an equipment opening, a room enclosure or a local source. The Radbar catalog covers 12 product families; 9 are lead-free, while clear lead acrylic, protective eyewear and face shields contain lead. Compare lead equivalence only when radiation quality, beam geometry and test method match.

FOUR STEPS
From radiation conditions to a product family.
- 01
Identify the radiation and its conditions
X-ray equipment: tube-voltage range, filtration and duty. Gamma sources: radionuclide, spectrum, geometry and measured dose rate.
- 02
Decide what must be protected
A person (garment, collar, eyewear), an equipment opening (curtain, accessory), a room (panel, window) or a local source (flexible wrap).
- 03
Compare only like-for-like data
Lead equivalence and attenuation need the same radiation quality, beam geometry, method and tested construction before they can be compared.
- 04
Prepare the inputs and request evidence
Send the checklist below and ask for reports that match the grade, sample construction and beam conditions.

| Scatter around the interventional field | Scatter protection drapes | Medical X-ray | 300 × 300 to 600 × 800 mm; >60% at 80 kVp (manufacturer value) | Lead-free |
| Single-use head and neck protection | Disposable collars & caps | Medical X-ray | 0.125–0.50 mmLE, five grades | Lead-free |
| Mobile C-arm accessory | C-arm radiation shield | Medical X-ray | Request model dimensions and lead equivalence | Lead-free |
| Eye protection | X-ray protective eyewear | Medical X-ray | 0.07 mmPb; 55 g | Lead-containing |
| Eye and face protection | Radiation face shields | Medical X-ray | 0.125 mmPb; 300–360 g | Lead-containing |
| Viewing windows and transparent barriers | Clear lead acrylic | X-ray | 0.07–0.5 mmPb; 87–93% light transmission | Lead-containing |
| Food and pharmaceutical inspection tunnels | Food scanner curtains | Industrial X-ray | 0.125–0.25 mmPb; 90 / 120 kV | Lead-free |
| Baggage and parcel screening tunnels | Security X-ray curtains | Security X-ray | 0.35–1.0 mmPb listed (0.125–2.0 custom); ≤120 / ≤160 kV | Lead-free |
| Walls of imaging or inspection rooms | Lead-free shielding panels | X-ray | 2 mmPb as listed (confirm conditions); 25 / 37 kg/m² | Lead-free |
| Shielding and insulation around X-ray tubes (OEM) | Lead-free X-ray tube shielding sleeves | Medical and industrial X-ray | Epoxy 2.4–2.7 mmPb @ 180 kV; silicone ≥ 2.1 mmPb at 4.5 mm; AC/DC 20 kV | Lead-free |
| Local gamma shielding for maintenance | Gamma shielding materials | Source-specific gamma | ALF: Am-241 / <100 keV, 0.125 / 0.25 mmPb (2021 catalog) | Lead-free |
Ranges are taken from each product catalog with their conditions. Values in different rows come from different test conditions and cannot be ranked. See each product page and original PDF for models, test conditions and supply status.

BY APPLICATION
Open a complete application guide.
Medical & interventional
From flexible garment cores to scatter drapes and transparent barriers, match each solution to the procedure, equipment and exposure geometry.
02Food inspection
Balance low contact resistance with curtain overlap, cleaning compatibility and complete-system shielding validation.
03Security screening
Engineer curtain assemblies for baggage and parcel flow, surface wear, return motion and maintainable coverage.
04Industrial & built environments
Plan panels, access points and transparent windows as an integrated enclosure, with validation under the actual equipment operating conditions.
05Nuclear & gamma applications
Evaluate flexible wraps and shielding materials against the radionuclide, energy, geometry and practical demands of maintenance work.
SPECIFICATION CHECKLIST
Prepare this before you ask.
- Radiation source or equipment model
- Operating voltage or energy spectrum, and known filtration
- Target attenuation or lead equivalence, with test method
- Dimensions, drawings and areal-weight limits
- Flexibility, mounting and processing needs
- Cleaning, temperature and duty cycle
- Target market and required documentation
- Expected quantity and timeline
Questions worth asking.
What should accompany a lead-equivalence value?
Include radiation quality or tube-voltage range, measurement geometry, test method and the tested construction. Identical mmPb labels are not enough to establish equivalent performance.
What information helps Radbar select a material?
Provide the source or equipment, operating voltage or spectrum, filtration where known, target attenuation or lead equivalence, test method, dimensions, areal-weight limit, flexibility, cleaning and destination market.
Can a market voltage chart determine my specification?
No. A market chart does not describe your equipment. Use its operating envelope, source data and intended geometry, and validate the complete assembly rather than assuming one voltage covers an entire industry.
